Aged Care Worker Pay in Melbourne 2026 — What Just Changed (and How to Use It)
Published: 20 October 2026 | Clinton Institute (RTO 41597, CRICOS Provider: 03540C) | Pay & Career Guide
Aged care workers in Melbourne just got their biggest pay uplift in a decade. The Aged Care Award (MA000018) increased 4.75% from 1 July 2026, and a Work Value Case increase followed in August. If you are looking for a reason to qualify — the pay story is the clearest it has ever been.
What Changed — and When
Two separate pay increases landed for aged care workers in quick succession during 2026:
- 1 July 2026: The Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review increased the Aged Care Award (MA000018) by 4.75% across all classification levels.
- Approximately 1 August 2026: A Work Value Case increase for direct care workers and nurses took effect, supported by the federal government's $17.7 billion aged care funding commitment. This is additional to the standard Annual Wage Review.
Together, these increases represent the most significant single-year wage movement for aged care workers in over a decade. If you are reading pay data from 2024 or early 2025, it is now outdated.

What Employers Are Actually Paying — Melbourne, October 2026
The award sets the floor. Advertised rates on Indeed and Seek are running above award minimums, reflecting genuine competition for qualified staff in a tight labour market:
| Candidate Profile | Advertised Rate (Melbourne, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Entry-level with CHC33021 (new graduate) | $34–$37/hr casual |
| 12+ months experience + CHC33021 | $37–$41/hr casual |
| CHC43015 + dementia specialisation | $41–$45/hr casual |
| Team leader / senior (CHC43015 or Diploma) | $45–$52/hr casual |
With the Work Value Case increase adding further upward pressure, these advertised ranges are expected to move higher through Q4 2026.
Where the Jobs Are Paying Premiums Right Now
Melbourne's western and northern corridors are the most active hiring zones — and employers in these areas are competing aggressively for qualified staff:
- Craigieburn: 986+ active aged care and disability support listings — the single busiest corridor in Melbourne right now
- Frankston: 600+ listings — strong demand in the south-eastern corridor
- Western suburbs: Werribee, Melton, Sunshine, Footscray — Redeema and Ability Plus are actively competing across these suburbs
- Dandenong: consistent high volume for disability support worker roles
The CHC33021 ROI Calculator
If you are deciding whether to invest 13 weeks in a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support, here is the approximate return calculation:
| Metric | Amount |
|---|---|
| Fast-track course duration | 13 weeks |
| Part-time fortnight earnings (48 hrs × $35/hr avg) | ~$1,680/fortnight |
| Full-year part-time earnings estimate | ~$43,680/year |
| Weekend/overtime loading (additional) | +$5,000-$12,000/year |
| Salary packaging (not-for-profit employer) | Up to $18,550 tax-free/year |
The qualification pays for itself within the first term of employment — and that is before the Work Value Case increase has fully filtered through to advertised rates.
Why Employers Are Paying Above Award
Melbourne has approximately 75,000 aged care job vacancies nationally, with the sector sitting inside Australia's top five most-in-demand job categories. The 12-month transfer lock (effective 2 October 2026) and a 49% decline in VET enrolments have constricted the candidate pipeline just as the Work Value Case increases are pulling more people into the sector.
Employers in Craigieburn, Frankston, and the western suburbs are not just advertising — they are building roster flexibility, offering guaranteed hours, and competing on placement certainty. The candidates who are landing these roles fastest are the ones who arrive with CHC33021 completed, placement hours done, and manual handling certification current.
"The students who get qualified and complete their placement first are the ones who have their choice of employer. Everyone else is reacting. The gap between acting and waiting is about $5-8 an hour right now — and it is widening."

What to Ask at Your Next Interview
Now that you know the award floor and the market range, use this knowledge at your next interview:
- Ask about the classification level. If the role is Level 1 direct care, the award minimum is $32.61/hr. If they offer below that — report them to the Fair Work Ombudsman.
- Ask about the casual loading structure. Casual rates should include the 25% loading on top of the base. Confirm whether the advertised rate is inclusive or exclusive of loading.
- Ask about guaranteed hours. Many employers in Craigieburn and the western suburbs are now offering minimum hour guarantees to attract qualified staff.
- Ask about the roster pattern. Morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend availability maximises your earning potential. The 48-hour fortnight student work limit applies during term — plan around it.
- Ask about salary packaging. Not-for-profit aged care employers offer up to $18,550 per year in tax-free salary packaging. This is worth approximately $5,000-$8,000 in after-tax value annually.
