Can I Use My Current Aged Care Job as My Placement Hours?

Published: August 17, 2026 | Clinton Institute (RTO 41597, CRICOS Provider: 03540C) | Melbourne

Yes — if your current role involves genuine aged care work under a qualified supervisor and meets the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support placement requirements, Clinton Institute (RTO 41597, CRICOS Provider: 03540C) may count your existing employment as placement hours. Here's how to find out if you qualify.

What are the conditions for using current employment as placement?

Clinton Institute (RTO 41597) will assess your current role against the CHC33021 placement requirements. Your role must involve direct personal care tasks with aged care clients — not just administrative or hospitality duties in an aged care setting. The facility must be a registered aged care provider, and your supervision must come from a qualified aged care professional.

Specific conditions include:

  • Your employer must be an approved aged care provider (residential or home care)
  • You must be supervised by a qualified supervisor who can sign off on your competencies
  • The duties must cover at least some units of competency in CHC33021
  • You must provide documentary evidence of your role and hours

If your role is primarily administrative, hospitality, or management with no direct client care, it does not qualify. According to the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, registered aged care facilities must meet specific care standards — your role must align with those direct care functions.

What evidence do I need to provide?

Clinton Institute requires documentation before approving current employment as placement. You will need:

  • A signed letter from your workplace supervisor confirming your role, duties, and supervision arrangements
  • Payslips or an employment contract showing your current hours and role
  • A position description outlining the tasks you perform
  • Evidence the facility is a registered aged care provider

The Clinton Institute student support team reviews each application individually. This is not an automatic process — the assessor will compare your duties against the units of competency in CHC33021 to determine whether your hours can be credited.

Does this apply to both CHC33021 and CHC43015?

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway for placement hours primarily applies to CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support students. If you are studying CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support, you may also apply on a case-by-case basis — however, the assessment is more rigorous because the Certificate IV covers advanced care coordination, dementia care, and leadership tasks that most entry-level roles do not include.

Contact the Clinton Institute admissions team to discuss your specific situation before assuming your employment will qualify.

Will I still need to complete some placement at a Clinton partner facility?

Possibly. If your current role covers some but not all CHC33021 competency requirements, you may need to complete supplementary hours at one of Clinton Institute's placement partners — Opal Healthcare, Arcare, or Benetas. This ensures you can demonstrate all required competencies before Clinton Institute issues your qualification.

Clinton Institute arranges all supplementary placement. You do not need to find these hours yourself.

"We understand that many students come to us already working in aged care. Our role is to make sure that work counts toward your qualification wherever it genuinely meets the standard. If your current role involves real aged care work with proper supervision, we'll work with you to get that recognised."

— Laiju Thomas, CEO, Clinton Institute (RTO 41597)

How do I apply to use my current job as placement?

Contact Clinton Institute before or during your course enrolment. You will need to complete a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment for the placement component. This involves submitting your evidence documents and a Clinton Institute assessor reviewing your current role against the CHC33021 units.
